Supporting services

Other construction services

Supporting construction and finishing services, secondary to our specialist bungaroosh, lime and traditional-building work.

These services support our core specialism and are carried out with the same attention to construction type and material compatibility.

Safe-Bricks is a building contractor first. Alongside our specialist bungaroosh, lime and damp investigation work, we undertake the full range of construction, renovation and finishing services required to complete a project in an older Brighton and Hove property.

This matters because separating the work — one contractor for the building repairs, another for the finishes — is often where problems are created or concealed. The same understanding of the construction that informs the repair should inform the decoration, the plastering and the joinery that follows.

Kitchen Fitting

Safe-Bricks undertakes complete kitchen installations and the building work required around them.

In older properties, removing an existing kitchen frequently exposes uneven masonry, damaged plaster, redundant services and walls that have been repaired many times. We carry out the associated wall repairs, plastering and preparation before the kitchen is fitted, so the finished room is properly integrated rather than assembled over concealed defects.

Bathroom Renovation

Our bathroom work covers complete refurbishment as well as the associated construction, plastering, waterproofing and finishing.

Where bathrooms sit against older external walls, we consider the existing construction and any moisture conditions before selecting finishes — rather than treating the bathroom as an isolated room.

Plastering

We undertake both conventional and lime plastering, selected according to the wall beneath.

Where a traditional solid wall requires a compatible finish, lime plaster may be appropriate. Where modern construction or dry internal partitions are involved, a gypsum system may be perfectly suitable. The material follows the construction, not a blanket preference.

Painting and Decorating

Decorating is frequently the final stage of a wider Safe-Bricks project, allowing preparation, repairs and plastering to be coordinated with the finish.

For traditional walls, the choice of coating matters. Where a lime-based system has been used, the final decoration should also be selected with the underlying construction and drying behaviour in mind.

Rendering

We undertake lime rendering and external wall repair for traditional properties, and suitable rendering on modern construction where appropriate.

The render system is selected to suit the substrate, exposure and condition of the masonry — not applied as a generic specification.

Garage Conversions

Safe-Bricks undertakes garage conversions across Brighton and Hove, from initial structural alterations through to insulation, plastering, services and finishes.

Each conversion is planned around the existing building, its intended use and the relevant Building Regulations. Where the garage connects to older construction, the junction between new and traditional work is given particular attention.

Home Extensions

We undertake residential extensions in Brighton, coordinating the structural, building and finishing work required to create new living space and integrate it with the existing property.

Where an extension meets an older building, the junction between new and traditional construction is one of the most important parts of the project.

Sash Windows and Period Property Work

Traditional windows are a defining feature of many Brighton and Hove properties. Our work around sash windows includes the associated masonry, render, plaster and decoration as part of wider period-property projects.

We consider the window as part of the surrounding wall rather than treating deterioration around it as an isolated cosmetic defect.

Masonry and Pointing Repairs

Brick, flint and mixed-masonry repairs form part of many of our projects, particularly where render has been removed or a wall has been opened up.

Repointing is carried out with mortar appropriate to the existing construction. Cement-based pointing on soft historic brick or lime-mortared masonry can accelerate deterioration, so the mortar is selected to suit the substrate.

A specialist remedial service often required following a structural or Level 3 survey is the reinstatement of an incomplete loft party wall, where open joints and missing brickwork in the roof void are repaired in lime mortar and matched brick.

Why Manage the Whole Project Together

Older properties respond best when the diagnosis, the repair and the finishing are managed as one sequence.

Where multiple trades are left to coordinate themselves, defects can be concealed behind new finishes and the cause of a problem can be lost in the sequence of work.

Safe-Bricks carries the building understanding from the diagnosis through to the final decoration, so the finished room is the result of a properly considered repair — not a collection of disconnected jobs.

Other Services as Part of a Wider Project

Most of these services are undertaken as part of larger renovations, but we also take on individual projects where the construction calls for a specialist approach.

We can coordinate combinations such as:

  • Bungaroosh repair followed by lime render and decoration
  • Damp investigation followed by plastering and decorating
  • Kitchen renovation with associated wall and plaster repairs
  • Garage conversion with connection to an older wall
  • Extension construction with traditional-wall junction detailing
  • Sash window surround repair with render and internal plaster

The scope is agreed before work begins so the quotation reflects the complete project.

Planning a Project?

If you are considering any of these services — individually or as part of a wider renovation — send Safe-Bricks photographs for an initial review.

Useful information includes:

  • Photographs of the area concerned
  • The age and type of property where known
  • Any existing damp, cracking or defects
  • Details of what you want to achieve
  • Whether the work forms part of a larger project

Photographs can help us understand the likely construction and scope, though significant defects may require an inspection before a quotation is prepared.

First step

Not sure where to start?

Send us photographs of the area of concern. It is the most straightforward first step — we will look at what you can see and advise on the appropriate next steps.

“I was recommended these guys by a friend and I'm really happy with their work. We own an old brick house and they repointed it using lime mortar.” — Jodie Ansell
